Nicole was employed as a nurse reviewer for SafeGuard Services (SGS) for fraud, waste and abuse reviews of the Medicare fee-for-service program and state Medicaid programs. Nicole worked directly with the investigators to provide the clinical and coding expertise for the reviews. She performed data analysis to look for aberrant billing patterns. She reviewed documentation the provider submitted to support billed services. She conducted research on coverage requirements for many different types of services including rehab services (PT, OT, ST, etc.), allergy immunology, neurological, durable medical equipment, office visits, surgical procedures, ophthalmology, laboratory testing, pharmacology, etc.
Nicole’s work at SGS also required her to work directly with representatives from CMS and state Medicaid agencies to develop a plan of action for review. She worked directly with staff from the Medicare Administrative Contractors to educate them on new patterns of fraud and help them develop new or amend current coverage and billing policies. She performed on-site visits and interviews of the provider and staff. When cases were referred to law enforcement, she worked with the law enforcement agents to provide clinical and coding expertise.
Nicole is currently functioning as a traveling RN in the main operating room for level 1 traumas and the following surgery types: orthopedic (laparoscopic and robot-assisted), cardiac, urological, gynecological, oncological, plastic surgery, neurological as well as thoracic and vascular procedures. She also assists with endoscopies and other general surgeries. Working at different facilities has given her experience with multiple different EMR systems. Her role includes mentoring new and existing employees, providing coding information for trauma procedures, review of files and coding for accuracy, and acting as a liaison between the coding team and the surgical teams. She is the committee chairperson for chart accuracy. She is responsible for charting patient outcomes, ICD-10-CM codes, HCPCS and CPT codes and other information needed for submission of a claim for payment.
